Tough on Crime - Omnibus Crime Bill C-10
The recent Montreal Diocesan Synod
joined with many other voices of protest when it passed
motion
G:
“Be
it resolved, that this Synod request that the Government
of Canada reconsider the proposals of the omnibus crime
bill concerning criminal justice to ensure that all
proposals seek to enhance traditional Canadian concepts
of justice that the process of justice should seek to
rebuild and reintegrate those who are detained under the
criminal law so that, those who seek to be, are
ultimately restored to our communities as effective,
capable and productive members of society.”

Minister
Jean-Marc Fournier in decrying the waste of money,
the waste of lives, and the undemocratic manner in which
these 9 bills are being rushed through Parliament.
Archbishop Rowan Williams: Time for us the
challenge the idols of high finance

"The protest at St Paul's was seen by an unexpectedly
large number of people as the expression of a widespread
and deep exasperation with the financial establishment
that shows no sign at all of diminishing. There is still
a powerful sense around – fair or not – of a whole
society paying for the errors and irresponsibility of
bankers; of messages not getting through; of impatience
with a return to 'business as usual' – represented by
still soaring bonuses and little visible change in
banking practices... " Read the rest of

Just
Say "No"
The US Episcopal Church rejects Anglican Covenant
"On 24 Oct 2011 the council unanimously
endorsed a resolution recommending the General
Convention – the governing body of the Episcopal Church
– not endorse the covenant as it now stands. The
Anglican Covenant was a political and theological threat
that would alter the American church's power base and
undo the advances made by the church's liberal wing in
recent years.
The US recommendation to reject the covenant likely
spells the death blow to the Archbishop of Canterbury's
plan to forge an agreement that sets limits on the
acceptable parameters of doctrine and disciple within
the Anglican Communion, and follows upon last week's
vote by the Sydney synod to reject the agreement. With
liberals and conservatives united in opposition to the
proposed agreement – though for different reasons – the
political future of the covenant is grim..."

Sometimes, I Am Startled Out of Myself
by
Barbara Crooker
like this morning, when
the wild geese came squawking,
flapping their rusty
hinges, and something about their trek
across the sky made me
think about my life, the places
of brokenness, the
places of sorrow, the places where grief
has strung me out to
dry. And then the geese come calling,
the leader falling back
when tired, another taking her place.
Hope is borne on wings.
Look at the trees. They turn to gold
for a brief while, then
lose it all each November.
Through the cold months,
they stand, take the worst
weather has to offer.
And still, they put out shy green leaves
come April, come May.
The geese glide over the cornfields,
land on the pond with
its sedges and reeds.
You do not have to be
wise. Even a goose knows how to find
shelter, where the corn
still lies in the stubble and dried stalks.
All we do is pass
through here, the best way we can.
They stitch up the sky, and it is whole
again.
