Trinity Institute 2009  “Radical Abundance: A Theology of Sustainability”
5 Speakers plus panel discussion.
Majora Carter, Timothy Gorringe, David Korten, Miriam MacGillis, Nestor Miguez.
http://www.trinitywallstreet.org/faith/institute/2009/

As we rethink how to grow, build, supply, consume, dispose, and recycle everything in our lives, we often fail at partnering with the marginalized and powerless, and thus adversely affect them. Building sustainable communities goes hand-in-hand with thoughtful building of infrastructures and physical spaces. Is there a theological basis for living abundantly while striving for justice and sustainability?

In 2009, Trinity Institute will explore sustainability through the lens of liberation theology, which views Jesus not only as redeemer but also liberator of the oppressed. It posits a vision of Christians working together toward social justice by considering all people as full partners in healing our planet and our communities, regardless of their social or economic status. Only in striving for sustainable relationships, rather than accumulating and consuming more for ourselves, can we discover true abundance.

First Light: Jesus and the Kingdom of God   12 sessions
http://www.livingthequestions.com

Featuring John Dominic Crossan and Marcus Borg

Why did Jesus happen when he happened? Why the confluence of the Baptism movement of John and the Kingdom movement of Jesus? Why the tiny villages around the Lake? Why the confrontations in Jerusalem? Why then? Why there? Why were the titles of Caesar Augustus -- Divine, Son of God, God from God, Lord, Redeemer, Liberator, and Savior of the World -- taken from a Roman emperor on the Palatine hill and given to a Jewish peasant on the Palestine plain? Was it low lampoon or high treason? Either way, the Romans were not laughing.

What were the priorities of Jesus' proclamation of the Kingdom? How was the status quo of Roman imperial theology subverted by this obscure Galilean whose message continues to indict empire today?

First Light is a 12-session DVD and web-based study of the historical Jesus and the Kingdom of God with two of the world's leading Jesus scholars on location throughout the Galilee and Jerusalem.

Via Media: The Anglican Way of Being Christian

8 Sessions with facilitator’s guide   http://www.montreal.anglican.ca/cle/viamedia.htm

The conversations in these videos are real; in each case, the approximately twenty minutes of film you are seeing was edited from a two-hour-long conversation. The conversations were ‘directed’ only in the sense that we made an effort to talk about the questions we anticipate from newcomers. It’s important to note that you have some flexibility with these videos. They don’t have to be shown in the order in which they appear here; some pilot congregations showed the “Anglican” video last with positive results, for example.

Via Media – Values
http://everyvoice.net/html/products/values.htm

Each session includes a 10-minute video, some time for small-group discussion, and some take-home materials. The following is a brief introduction to each of the via media: value videos.

1) Communion: An Ethical Choice

Session One is designed around the first question in the Baptismal Covenant: “Will you continue in the Apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?” It focuses on how we are shaped by a Eucharistic community, and how we stay in community even when we disagree.

2) Repentance: An Ethical Journey

In Session Two, participants will have an opportunity to focus on the second question: “Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, when you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?” Participants will have the opportunity to explore how our own paths are filled with moments of redemption and healing, and how we can apply those values to our global community.

3) Witness: An Ethical Example

We find in Session Three examples of the way some Episcopalians live out their faith in the world, as they answer the question: “Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ?”

4) Service: An Ethical Imperative

Session Four reminds us of Jesus’ own commandment to love our neighbors. In loving them, we serve them. It begs the question, if we are to serve our neighbor, then just who ARE our neighbors? In the Baptismal Covenant this is stated as: “Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?”

5) Respect: An Ethical Right

Session Five is about human rights and responsibilities. During this session participants will encounter the tension in which we often find ourselves living as Christians in the world around us. We are asked: “Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?” Our answer to this question helps to guide us on our path through life.

6) Go Forth! Ethics in Action

The sessions end with the sixth week. Using the ministry of the deaconate, to which we are all called in some ways, participants explore the words of the dismissal and examine what we are really called to do when we reenter our weekly routines after Sunday.

Jesus for the Non-Religious
DVD  68 minutes    with John Shelby Spong

http://www.livingthequestions.com/

Jesus for the Non-Religious DVD is a 68-minute distillation of Bishop Spong’s understanding of the Godpresence in Christ. In this lecture, Spong explores the meaning of ‘Christ,’ images of Messiah, how Christ has been experienced through the ages, and how the divinity of Christ has its ultimate expression in a fulfilled humanity.

Jesus calls you to be whole, not religious. Jesus calls you to be real, not religious. Jesus calls you to be loving, not moral and righteous. Jesus calls you to be inclusive, not hating everybody that disagrees with you and claiming your superiority over them. That’s what this Jesus portrait is about and that’s why people believed that they experienced all that God is in the life and in the person of Jesus of Nazareth.”

Noise
   1 DVD  10 minutes
by NOOMA   http://www.nooma.com/    (from the series)

Why is silence so hard to deal with? Why is it so much easier for us to live our lives with a lot of things going on all the time than to just be in silence? We’re constantly surrounded with “voices” that are influencing us on how to think, feel, and behave. Movies, music, TV, Internet, cell phones, and a never-ending barrage of advertising. There’s always something going on. Always noise in our lives. But maybe there’s a connection between the amount of noise in our lives and our inability to hear God. If God sometimes feels distant to us, maybe it’s not because he’s not talking to us, but simply because we aren’t really listening.
