“Radical Abundance: A Theology of Sustainability”
5 Speakers plus panel discussion.
Majora Carter, Timothy Gorringe, David Korten, Miriam
MacGillis, Nestor Miguez.
http://www.trinitywallstreet.org/faith/institute/2009/
As we rethink how to grow, build, supply, consume,
dispose, and recycle everything in our lives, we often fail
at partnering with the marginalized and powerless, and thus
adversely affect them. Building sustainable communities goes
hand-in-hand with thoughtful building of infrastructures and
physical spaces. Is there a theological basis for living
abundantly while striving for justice and sustainability?
In 2009, Trinity Institute will explore
sustainability through the lens of liberation theology,
which views Jesus not only as redeemer but also liberator of
the oppressed. It posits a vision of Christians working
together toward social justice by considering all people as
full partners in healing our planet and our communities,
regardless of their social or economic status. Only in
striving for sustainable relationships, rather than
accumulating and consuming more for ourselves, can we
discover true abundance.

BONHOEFFER is a 93-minute documentary film that tells the
dramatic story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the young German
theologian who offered one of the first clear voices of
resistance to Adolf Hitler. Bonhoeffer openly challenged his
church to stand with the Jews in their time of need, and
eventually joined his family in the plots to kill Hitler.
His books, Cost of Discipleship, Letters and Papers from
Prison, and Ethics, were written during the struggle and are
considered classics in the world of religion and ethics.
The film, shot on location in Germany and the
United States, features interviews with family members,
friends, students and associates who knew Bonhoeffer
personally, including the last interview given by
Bonhoeffer's closest friend and biographer, Eberhard Bethge,
and an interview with Ruth Alice von Bismarck, the sister of
Bonhoeffer's fiancée, Maria von Wedemeyer.

Does God really condemn loving homosexual relationships? Is
the chasm separating Christianity from gays and lesbians too
wide to cross? Is the Bible an excuse to hate? These
questions and more are answered in this award-winning
documentary, which brilliantly reconciles homosexuality and
Biblical scripture – and reveals that religious anti-gay
bias is based almost solely upon a misinterpretation of the
Bible.

Why the confrontations in Jerusalem? Why then? Why there?
Why were the titles of Caesar Augustus -- Divine, Son of

value videos.
1)
Communion: An Ethical Choice
Session
One is designed around the first question in the Baptismal
Covenant: “Will you continue in the Apostles teaching and
fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?”
It focuses on how we are shaped by a Eucharistic community,
and how we stay in community even when we disagree.
2)
Repentance: An Ethical Journey
In Session
Two, participants will have an opportunity to focus on the
second question: “Will you persevere in resisting evil, and,
when you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?”
Participants will have the opportunity to explore how our
own paths are filled with moments of redemption and healing,
and how we can apply those values to our global community.
3)
Witness: An Ethical Example
We find in
Session Three examples of the way some Episcopalians live
out their faith in the world, as they answer the question:
“Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God
in Christ?”
4)
Service: An Ethical Imperative
Session
Four reminds us of Jesus’ own commandment to love our
neighbors. In loving them, we serve them. It begs the
question, if we are to serve our neighbor, then just who ARE
our neighbors? In the Baptismal Covenant this is stated as:
“Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your
neighbor as yourself?”
5)
Respect: An Ethical Right
Session
Five is about human rights and responsibilities. During this
session participants will encounter the tension in which we
often find ourselves living as Christians in the world
around us. We are asked: “Will you strive for justice and
peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every
human being?” Our answer to this question helps to guide us
on our path through life.
6) Go
Forth! Ethics in Action
The
sessions end with the sixth week. Using the ministry of the
deaconate, to which we are all called in some ways,
participants explore the words of the dismissal and examine
what we are really called to do when we reenter our weekly
routines after Sunday.

Why is silence so hard to deal with? Why is it so much
easier for us to live our lives with a lot of things going
on all the time than to just be in silence? We’re constantly
surrounded with “voices” that are influencing us on how to
think, feel, and behave. Movies, music, TV, Internet, cell
phones, and a never-ending barrage of advertising. There’s
always something going on. Always noise in our lives. But
maybe there’s a connection between the amount of noise in
our lives and our inability to hear God. If God sometimes
feels distant to us, maybe it’s not because he’s not talking
to us, but simply because we aren’t really listening.
